program notes:
Fermato a due sassi is the first verse of the poem Paesaggio. Together with Distacco – both poems are part of the collection Il Porto sepolto – I chose this poem to represent an idea that has followed the compositional work of this piece. Images and suggestions of concentration, awareness, and resignation come to light in both Ungaretti’s poems. On the musical level, I aimed to create an intimate and homogeneous sound, through a linear and whispered counterpoint. The five instruments come together to create different layers of sound, in which rarely the single emerges from the blurred and light sound surface.

Eccovi un uomo
uniforme
Eccovi una lastra
di deserto
dove il mondo
si specchia
m’avviene di svegliarmi
e di congiungermi
e di possedere
Il raro bene che mi nasce
così piano mi nasce
e quando ha durato
così insensibilmente
s’è spento

Paesaggio

Fermato a due sassi
languisco
sotto questa immensa
appannata volta di cielo
Il groviglio dei sentieri
possiede la mia cecità
Non esiste altra cosa
più squallida
di questa monotonia

Una volta
non sapevo
ch’è banale
la consunzione
del cielo
